Nooku Server announced

We are already familiar with Nooku Content, the site translation tool for Joomla. We have also become acquainted with Nooku Framework, a rapid application development framework for (so far) Joomla. We have published a series of Nooku tutorials available from this site that will show you more of the framework. Now, the Nooku gang has released another beast into the wild: Nooku Server.

Nooku Server, described as Joomla on Steroids, is a multi-site distribution of Joomla that has been developed by Nooku in collaboration with the Belgian Police. Nooku was originally hired to transform 195 standalone Joomla sites to one multisite solution, and fortunately for us, the result of that fruitful partnership is going to be released as Free and Open Source Software.

It is reasonable to assume that, when developing a website for the Belgian Police, multi-lingual capabilities are probably also included in the mix. Wether Nooku Content will be included in Nooku Server remains to be seen though. Up until now it has only been available for partners to download.

Nooku Server will be 99% backwards compatible with Joomla 1.5, but it seems it will be trimmed down a whole lot too, so that old legacy components like com_polls finally disappears from the core codebase.

The server requirements to run Nooku Server will also be a bit stricter:

  • PHP v5.2.6+ with MySQLi support
  • MySQL 5.0.4+
  • Mootools 1.2 with compatibility layer

For now, Nooku Server is only available to Nooku partners and contributors. People looking to contribute are encouraged to contact Nooku by e-mail or post to the mailing list.
